Very little information has been released concerning the summer 2013 blockbuster Pacific Rim, but what we do know is enough to get me excited. First, it’s directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Hobbit before dropping out over scheduling issues). He doesn’t necessarily make cinematic masterpieces, but his visual style and creativity is one of a kind (i.e. the amazing types of creatures he comes up with) and he’s expert at mixing this with an entertaining story. So this film already has one major thing going for it.
Beyond that, we know little else except that as of a week ago the film finally entered production, as noted here. Interviewed in Empire, del Toro akin the film to a mega-monster action-flick that includes 25-foot monsters fighting 25-foot robots piloted by humans. Now, some of you may immediately groan at this idea, but don’t jump the gun here. If Michael Bay was directing this, we would know what to expect, but he isn’t. del Toro is, and that means something wholly new and original. I fully expect this film to be filled to the brim with awesomeness and, at the least, be amazing to look at.
Alas, that’s all we have for now. No pictures (production just started!) and we’re certainly not going to see anything for a while, much less a full trailer. Still, I say Pacific Rim qualifies as a film to keep an eye on.
